Tamara Albaitis uses audio wire and raw speaker cones primarily, both for the sonic and sculptural properties; three- dimensional line drawings that come alive with sound. Most work is informed by the place and time it’s in (site-specific.)

‘The intersection of opposites intrigues me, finding a place of balance - the place where they meet that defines the relationship. Specifically I’m drawn towards the ever-growing inclusion of the inorganic world (digital, machines, ect) within our inorganic fundamental selves - how is this re-shaping our lives? - TLA

Tamara got her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in painting and drawing in 2002. During that time, she took courses at the Hanghzou International School of Art in China studying landscaping painting and drawing which had deep influence both visually and conceptually in her work. In 2005, she graduated with the first MFA in sound art + design granted in the United States from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. By this point, the inclusion of rudimentary sound technology (speaker wires and speaker cones) underpinned her visual/audio language - introducing the dichotomy of digital communication into her fundamental proclivities towards eastern philosophies and our place in the natural world.

Tamara’s work has been shown internationally; most notably at the 9th International Istanbul Biennial, The European Sound Delta in Paris, The Digital Media Centre in Bracknell, England, artTransponder in Berlin, V2 Institute for Unstable Media in Rotterdam, and ParaSite in Hong Kong, as well as extensively through the United States. Residencies included: Recology’s Artist in Residence Program in San Francisco, Djerassi Artist Residency, The European Sound Delta and the Vermont Studio Center.

She was the recipient of the Eureka Fellowship (Fleishhacker Foundation) in the 2011 - 2013 grant cycle, the largest cash award given to a California artist.
